2016 LA FRENZ Spring Newsletter

WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE 17TH SPRING RELEASE OF OUR WINES!

I have no reservations in saying across our entire portfolio of wines we are releasing in 2016, that this is the best we have ever done!!! It was partly due to two back to back, incredible growing seasons but also the culmination of years of fine tuning the vineyards and soils, tailoring individual winemaking styles, putting in place state of the art equipment to achieve this and of course, a healthy dose of lady luck!

THE 2015 SEASON

I have said before that 2014 was the best growing season I had ever experienced in my 22 years in Canada. It started 2 weeks early and was a long steady growing season achieving superb flavor profiles. I didn’t think it could get any better and then along came 2015. It was a record breaking growing season, accumulating growing degree days (hours that a vine functions), only seen once before in the Okanagan’s history. This was achieved, not by an excessively hot summer, but by an Il Niño effect that saw budburst and vine growth a full month ahead of normal. September returned to our typical fall temperatures and gave the vines time to develop their wonderful flavors. As I write this newsletter, 2016 is ahead of last year and potentially another great vintage in the making.

2016 RELEASES

We will be doing 3 wine releases this year instead of our normal two. We are announcing mostly our 2015 white wines with this newsletter followed by our five Reserve wines due to be released mid- June. Our 2014 red wines will be announced at the end of July.

THE TASTING EXPERIENCE AND WINE SH

We have implemented some exciting new changes at LA FRENZ in an effort to provide the absolute best service to our valued guests. We have revamped our wine shop inside and out. Lighter, brighter, marble like modern polished concrete inside and of course the same expansive views over the lake and vineyards.

We have also built a new covered pergola around the entire patio so that we can provide seated patio tastings throughout the entire season. The exterior renovations will allow us to offer a seated tasting experience in a leisurely atmosphere.

Guests will be offered the choice of two tasting flights that showcase the wonderful wines we are known for. Each flight will be approximately 30 minutes in duration. I would highly recommend making a reservation request ahead of time to guarantee your table will be waiting for you. To recognise our long time loyal customers, we will be sending a 2016 VIP card to use on your next visit to LA FRENZ enabling you and a guest to enjoy a complimentary tasting flight of your choice. These will be enclosed inside your first shipment of wine or available in person for those preferring to pick up their order at the wine shop.

MORE EXCITING NEWS BEHIND THE SCENES

Our youngest daughter Elise has just returned from 3 months working the vintage down under. Firstly at Taltarni Vineyards in central Victoria, then over to their Clover Hill facility in the Tamar Valley, Tasmania that specialises exclusively in Champagne style wines. Tasmania is quite literally making some of the best champagne styles in the world, so it was incredible for her to experience a harvest there. We believe the Okanagan can produce Champagne to rival the best in the world, so after Elise’s insistence, we have tiraged our very first champagne this past spring. Our blend is classic Chardonnay with a lesser amount of Pinot Noir. This will rest on its yeast lees for a minimum 3 years before its release in 2019, but we are excited to share this with you as it is already sensational!

THE SCOOP

All of the white wines from 2015 have had an increased lemon yellow colour from the very beginning and are fuller bodied and superbly textured with almost a creaminess across all varieties. This is partly attributed to the season but also a result of slowly fermenting select parcels in the Nomblot concrete eggs we imported from France last year. They have had a great effect.

2015 Sauvignon Blanc, has lingering passionfruit and herbaceous green bean on both the aroma and palate with wonderful crisp acidity to make it my “go to” wine, super chilled this summer.

2015 Sémillon, while this has the classic lemon rind and straw of a cool climate Sémillon, this vintage also captured flavors of super ripe figs and pear. With incredible density and richness of flavour, while superb drinking now, this wine will be amazing if bottle aged for 5 years and beyond.

2015 Chardonnay, our unique "peaches n' cream" style Chardonnay has always been a great example of the varietal with abundant fruit forward notes of ripe white peach and nectarine wrapped around a complex core and a lengthy honeyed oak finish.

2015 Viognier, this variety shows its best when fully ripened. Superb golden colour, brimming with an aromatic potpourri and ripe stone fruits. It shows purity of fruit and is gorgeously rich with this vintage.

2015 Alexandria, is perennially our tropical fruit salad in a glass. In hotter climates, the Muscat varieties can easily lose acidity and freshness, however we don’t experience this problem and this wine is an example of where the Okanagan can really shine. This wine brims with a kaleidoscope of tropical fruits with a touch of rose petal over a beautifully elegant palate, with a lovely lingering minerality and acidity on the finish.

2014 Desperation Hill Pinot Noir, this was first released last spring to rave reviews and sold out very quickly. This wine is darker than the 2013, the wine is so dense, complex and brooding it’s almost beyond description. It has all the classic hallmarks of this wonderful variety, strawberry and rhubarb with hints of sappiness and wet earth over a dense silky palate. I am ecstatic and extremely proud to be releasing a Pinot of this quality from this wonderful vineyard. More complete descriptions and online ordering details on our website.
