LA FRENZ Vintage 2015 Red Wine Release
I didn’t think that I could be more ecstatic to be presenting the release of our 2015 red wines but then there was an announcement…
“Small winery of the year, 2017” National Wine Awards of Canada
The results of the National Wine Awards were just released on Thursday 27th. This year was the largest and most comprehensive judging ever of Canadian wines with over 1,700 entries from 242 wineries. Medals were scarce with LA FRENZ being awarded 12 medals and the big news of winning “Small Winery of the Year”.
After receiving the same award at the Dan Berger International Wine Competition in California back in May, this is the second such award in 2017 from the only two competitions we have entered. This also represents our 5th Winery of the Year award in the last 4 years. It is extremely satisfying for me knowing what goes into achieving this and for the whole LA FRENZ team to continue to be in the top echelon of producers at every major competition we enter, whether National or International. You can safely tell all your friends “You can pay more, but you will be hard pressed to buy better”.
The 2015 growing season was one of the warmest seasons in my 22 years in Canada and as I’ve stated the best ever season for red wines. These wines, as a group are big, dense concentrated monsters!! We are now 80% estate grown overall from our 4 vineyards but closer to 95% when it comes to our red wines.
Another of the LA FRENZ goals from the past 5 years has been to showcase the vineyards in our wines. We want our wines to reflect the terroir or sense of place and these 2015 reds do this in spades. All have been barrel-aged with a healthy percentage of the best French coopers but the nuances of the soil and the varietal fruit character are clearly, front and centre.

2015 Syrah, Rockyfeller Vineyard: – Black in color, this is fully ripened Syrah. We continue to co-ferment a small amount of Viognier for what it brings to the aroma and the silkiness to the palate. This wine brims with aromas of violets, blue fruits and floral notes with underlying tones of savory herbs, spices even hints of licorice or anisette. The palate is superbly rich, with silky texture and mouthfeel. In a blind tasting I could easily mistake this as one of the great examples from Northern Rhone.
2015 Malbec, Rockyfeller Vineyard: – This wine is so typical of ripe Malbec from low yielding vines. It’s simply black, brambly and brooding. It is an incredibly fragrant wine showing dark earthy tones with highlights of stewed rhubarb and red fruits over a mouth-filling, wonderfully textured palate structure.
2015 Merlot, Rattlesnake Vineyard: – At over 15% alcohol this wine is an anomaly for the Naramata Bench. It is probably the biggest and most concentrated Merlot we have produced in 18 years. Dense and opulent this vintage could easily rival the best examples from the Napa starting at twice the price!! This is not your patio sipper. I wouldn’t dare open this without your very best company and a 14 oz Alberta rib eye, even if you’re vegan.
2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Rockyfeller Vineyard: – Super ripe fruit at 14.7% alcohol, this wine is black, showing intense aromas of cassis or Ribena with subtle hints of mint, eucalypt and espresso from a small portion of new toasted French barriques. These same characteristic are displayed on the palate over superb, ripe fine grain tannins that seem to never end. This is a beautiful ripened Cabernet, with density and varietal correctness, sensational.
