2019 Spring Release

We are excited to announce the spring release from LA FRENZ showcasing the vibrant white wines from the wonderful 2018 vintage. 

A milestone - we are 20 years old!!!

We couldn’t be prouder to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of LA FRENZ this year. It has been quite the journey with many, many memorable milestones along the way. 

I look back at when we started the winery in 1999 and compare that to what it has evolved into today. I am so proud of where we are at and humbled by all the support our loyal followers have given over the past 20 years.

We were thrilled to acquire the Probyn/Eastman vineyard north of Naramata in August 2018. This has been owned by the Probyn family for over 3 generations and originally planted for us 10 years ago. I thank them for allowing us to take stewardship of this Class 1 site.  I stated after we purchased and planted the 16 acre vineyard across from the winery, that this would be the last one and aptly named it Freedom 75. We renamed this latest purchase as the Wits End vineyard. 

This now takes LA FRENZ to 48 acres of estate vineyards over five individual sites and our wine production to 95% estate grown. The experience and expertise of our vineyard team with an intimate knowledge of each site’s terroir is what allows LA FRENZ to be as consistent as we are, year after year. 

To coincide with our anniversary year and to take us into the next decade, we have totally revamped our packaging. We engaged the very experienced label designers Tucker Creative, Adelaide who were amazing to work with.  The various formats feature modern yet classic colours, wrap around labels with easily readable script and the most iconic mountain/lake view just so reminiscent of the Naramata Bench. We hope you enjoy the change as much as we do. 

The 2018 growing season was a great year, right up with the best two or three years of the past decade in accumulated heat units.  Budburst happened at the beginning of May which is very typical for the Okanagan. May into June proved to be incredibly warm and that had us extra busy keeping ahead of the rapidly growing vineyards. It’s easy to get complacent with a strong start to the season like this but experience has shown that it’s the weather late in the season over September or October and the work done up to that point, that really determines the quality of the harvest. September proved to be warmer than usual and sealed the deal for a great harvest. We were then able to harvest at a very leisurely, albeit extended pace at the optimum flavour and ripeness levels throughout October. 

I tasted through the spring release wines and others to be released in the coming months to see how they were developing in bottle. What an amazing range of wines to be releasing that are a culmination of the past 20 years and truly world class in every sense of the word! 

Spring release wines 3 May, 2019

2018 Sauvignon Blanc: –   This fresh crisp wine is loaded with kiwi fruit, spicy passionfruit and green bean. The palate has amazing zing, richness and length for this variety. A perennial favorite, our Sauvignon Blanc is probably the most awarded in the entire NW over the past decade and this wine is destined to continue in this tradition.

2018 Semillon: –   This wine reminds me instantly of lemon meringue pie. It brims in its youth with lemon rind and grapefruit over a core of honeyed tropical fruits. These same flavours continue onto the mouth filling palate and finish with a hint of salty brine that screams to be paired with oyster on the half shell. This vineyard is now nearing 3 decades and it is this vine age that contributes to the amazing palate density of this wine year in, year out.

2018 Riesling Clone 49: –   This is the second release of this wine style. Just a single acre of this clone is planted in our warmer Rockyfeller Vineyard near Oliver. Clone 49 is the most widely planted in Alsace and we have produced an off dry style reminiscent of the region. The color is a beautiful lemon yellow reflecting the low cropping yields. This wine has all the characteristics of a classic Riesling with honey, wildflowers and granny smith apples. The beautiful off dry palate dances between a sherbet like minerality and residual sweetness, a superb wine that will develop beautifully over the next few years.

2018 Riesling Clone 21B: –  This is the most widely planted grape in the Mosel, Germany and we chose to plant this clone for our cooler Freedom 75 Vineyard on the Naramata Bench. This is a drier style that displays really pretty floral and citrus, lime flavours wrapped around a very precise, linear backbone of acidity with just enough balancing sweetness.

2018 Viognier: – This is a very full bodied example of this Rhone variety brimming with tree ripened mango and fully ripened pear with subtle tones of anisette, so unique to this variety.  A portion was fermented in concrete eggs imported from France, this provides incredible texture and density while respecting the varietal fruit.  The flavours are reminiscent of a mouth coating orange creamsicle, simply delicious.

2018 Chardonnay: – This is our classic “peaches and cream” style.  The intent is to never over power the wonderful fruit of the Freedom 75 Chardonnay but use just a small portion of barrel fermentation to provide just a hint of oak in the final assemblage.  This wine jumps out of the glass with nectarine, white peach and stone fruits. The palate is creamy and rich as a result of a few months sur lie aging on its own yeast lees.

2018 Un-oaked Chardonnay: – We are excited this year to have made a limited quantity of  this “Un-Oaked” Chardonnay to showcase the grape’s versatility. The senses are greeted with a lovely nose of frangipani flowers, Bartlett pear, and flint with a hint of dulce de leche. The palate, rich with flavours of nectarine, mandarin zest, green cardamom pods and slate is enhanced with a lingering fresh acidity.  

2018 Alexandria: –  Every year, the seductiveness and purity of Muscat fruit in this wine is quite amazing and this wine is no exception.  It’s simply an explosion of lychee, tropical fruits, pink musk candy and rose petal.  It is luscious and sweet reminiscent of a tropical fruit parfait, delicious.

2017 Desperation Hill Pinot Noir: –  Pinot Noir is known to be so transparent of where it is grown, this is another great Pinot from the Desperation Hill vineyard. Red fruits predominate on the aroma over subtle layers of freshly turned earth, truffles and forest floor complexities. The true quality of this Pinot is shown with its endless nuances of fruit, sap, earth and cured meat overlaying a mouth filling, textured and visceral palate. This is the classic “clenched fist in a silk glove” style that we strive so hard to produce each year.
