The much anticipated 2021 Spring wine Release

With bud break starting in our vineyards in the last couple of days, what a fitting time it is to be releasing yet another superb portfolio of Red and White wines.

As has become our new practice, we have delayed releasing our 2018 red wines by a full six months to coincide with our Spring White releases.  This change is proving to give these wines more time to integrate in barrel and further development in bottle before release. The results are simply stunning.

These are concentrated Red wines showing beautiful varietal correctness with endless layers of complexity that will provide drinking pleasure now or for years to come.

Our experienced vineyard team do an impeccable job of adjusting to each season, managing the deficit irrigation and super low cropping levels to produce grapes of the benchmark quality we demand at the winery.

The winery teams agenda is then to steward that fruit into infinitely complex wines of finesse that reflect the nuances of the very vineyard each is grown, hence our naming of each wines vineyard source.

The 2020 white wines are jam packed with beautiful cool climate fruit characteristics, made as always in the styles we have perfected over the past 21 years. We plant each of our vineyards to varieties and clones that we believe are capable of producing super premium grapes and then fine tune vineyard practices to consistently provide the grape flavour profile we are looking for from that very vineyard or even rows within that vineyard.

Like every grape growing region in the world, the Okanagan growing seasons present subtle differences, so achieving excellence is always a moving target.  2020 was a mild Summer which had the whole industry concerned if we then had a repeat of the previous year’s cool Fall weather.

The weather gods delivered with warm mild temperatures to the very end of October which allowed for a long slow ripening to maximize flavor and make for a leisurely harvest schedule.

2020 ultimately proved to be an excellent year for us, one to be thankful of the benefits of growing 97% of your own grapes by an expert team with over 40 years of actual experience of farming in the Okanagan.

At LA FRENZ our focus has always been about authenticity and quality, producing wines Canadians can be proud of serving that can stand alongside their counterparts from anywhere in the world. This release represents a great opportunity to support local with the added bonus of the truly excellent value we are known for.

To the discerning Wine Club members who have already been preordering online during these still trying times, we THANK YOU wholeheartedly for your continued loyal support, you are the mainstay of LA FRENZ and truly appreciated. We have been overwhelmed by your support and are diligently working on packing your orders and getting them out to you as fast as we can. If your wine has not arrived as yet, thank you for your patience, if you have already received your club order, 'cheers!' and we trust you are enjoying our new releases.

Our Wine Club members have increased substantially over the past year, given many of our customers can’t come to the winery and try the wines firsthand under the current circumstances. This is a double edged sword as a number of wines have already SOLD OUT with other new releases close behind, so there is sure to be some valued long time customers who have missed out on buying them. For front of the line pre-selections upon release I would highly recommend joining the Wine Club and enjoy its added benefits.

These new releases will be available to purchase and taste in our Wine Shop from April 30th.

Visits to the Wine Shop do now require a reservation, please visit our website to book a tasting.

2020 Sauvignon Blanc: We hand harvested over three separate ripeness levels in an effort to capture the full spectrum of what this variety can produce. The result is a vibrant fresh, crisp style brimming with fragrant passionfruit, kiwi and herbal notes. The palate is a zingy kaleidoscope of herbal fruits with excellent weight and endless intensity. Consistently one of the most awarded in the Pacific NW.

2020 Sémillon: The grapes used for this wine were planted in the early 80’s representing some of the oldest in the valley.  The aroma is reminiscent of homemade lemonade and freshly cut grapefruit with this vintage having alluring hints of tropical Muscadet. We fermented a portion in French concrete eggs for added richness and texture. An excellent Sémillon, beautiful in its youth but capable of developing for up to 5-10 years for added complexities. A perennial favorite.

2020 Riesling 21B: This is a very precise and linear drier style Riesling showing excellent citrus, floral and lime notes. The palate has excellent fruit, structure and intensity to develop beautifully for many years.  Our 2016 release which was the first release of this style, is drinking superbly now, showcasing the potential of aged Riesling.

2020 Riesling 49:  This is from our warmer Rockyfeller vineyard and fermented to an off-dry style, loaded with wildflowers, rich honey and lime over an intense luscious palate.  Aficionados the world over can’t decide whether dry or off-dry is best. We believe, why stress? They both legitimately showcase what the variety can do and why the Okanagan is fast becoming renowned for this variety.

2020 Chardonnay: A portion of this wine was gently cool fermented to retain melon, pears and stone fruits.  The remainder was fermented in French barrels and followed by resting on its own yeast lees to produce a round and richly textured wine with underlying complexities of roasted nuts and crème brûlée.

2020 Unoaked Chardonnay: This wine is made in the Chablis style to highlight the minerality and purity of fruit that can be achieved with this variety without using any oak whatsoever. To enhance the body and textural mouthfeel, the wine was 100% fermented in Nomblat concrete eggs we imported from France, followed by 4 months resting on its yeast lees for added creaminess. An excellent small production wine.

2020 Viognier: This is an intriguing Rhône variety that is reluctant to show its best until fully ripened. With an alcohol more akin to a red wine this is a warm, full- bodied, opulent white wine of great viscosity. It is extremely aromatic displaying banana, overripe peach and grilled nectarines with typical hints of anisette. In a word “delicious”.

2020 Alexandria: Chill this wine and order in some of your favorite Thai food for the perfect evening. I can’t help but use the analogy “Gewurztraminer on steroids!!” in describing the Alexandria, it is just so full of aromatic tropical fruits, lychee and musk flavours. This release is elegant in style yet luscious, and as pretty as a picture. A wonderfully made blend of Muscat varieties.

2020 Pinot Noir Rosé: (SOLD OUT) We have continued to produce this wine style because of customer demand and to showcase the kaleidoscope of red fruits we achieve from our Desperation Hill vineyard. The style is dry, crisp and linear but brimming with red fruits such strawberry, rhubarb and ripe watermelon. This super refreshing wine is quintessential to drink chilled on any summer occasion, delicious.

2019 Desperation Hill Pinot Noir: (SOLD OUT) Another great Pinot Noir from this renowned vineyard. A dark garnet red indicative its of low cropping and concentration. The aroma is perfumed, candied red fruits with supporting layers of wet earth, forest floor, chanterelles and hints of bacon from the classy French oak.  The palate is very dense and structured for a Pinot Noir indicating drinkability now, but its best is yet to come. Get out a burgundy glass and savor this wine.

The word is out like a raging bushfire about the quality of our Pinot Noir wines. Winning an unprecedented best Pinot Noir in Canada under $30 and our Reserve winning best over $30 at the ACWC in 2019 only added to the following. For those that didn’t get to order this wine don’t despair, the 2018 Reserve Pinot Noir is incredible and will be released later in the summer.

2018 Syrah: This fully ripened Syrah was co-fermented with 5% Viognier for added perfume. This wine has the most alluring complex aromas, that almost defy description. Superb dark fruits, chocolate coated blueberries and violets overlaid with complex brambles.   A powerful Syrah but with great finesse and complexity. A world class Syrah by any measure and an absolute bargain!!

2018 Malbec: Our benchmark Malbec’s have always been the reserve wines from Argentina and this would fit right in, an excellent wine. We literally halved the cropping level to produce a super ripe Malbec loaded with dark fruits, bramble with hints of pepper overlaid with excellent cigar box influences from extended time in French oak. A big, rich, round wine that screams to be paired with charred Argentinian style Asada.

2018 Merlot: Literally black in color with an alcohol level of 15% our Merlot displays an intensity rarely achieved with this variety. This wine immediately reminds me of the classic Merlot wines from Howell Mountain, Napa. It displays highly aromatic layers of ripe plums, cassis and mocha with complex bramble and dark earth tones. A mouth filling, opulent and plush palate now, but with a superb tannin structure that could see this wine developing comfortably over the next decade.

2018 Cabernets:  This is a Meritage or Bordeaux style blend of 71% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Malbec all from our Rockyfeller vineyard.  This vineyard is approaching 15 years old and the Cabernet Franc has been so exceptional we decided to release a wine showcasing what this variety can produce when fully ripened.  Cabernet Franc always has seductive, highly aromatic layers of black currant cassis, aromatic menthol, leather and eucalyptus.  The palate is structured with fine grained tannins but with a suppleness and finesse that is the hallmark of this variety.

Some truly wonderful wines to treat yourself and friends and under the circumstances shipped free of charge for another year, straight to your door.

Stay safe and enjoy.
